April Bishopric Message
In the October 2009 General Conference Russell T. Osguthorpe, President of the General Sunday School Presidency, spoke of the power teachers have in the Church. This talk will be studied in Priesthood and Relief Society as the “Teachings for Our Times” lesson on April 25th. We encourage each of you to study this talk in full.
President Osguthorpe taught that teachers in the Church "help save lives
by sharing their knowledge of the gospel." This is done as "we teach key doctrine, invite learners to do the work God has for them, and then promise that blessings will surely come." Two great tools the Church has provided to help teachers to invite those they teach to take action and receive blessings are the guides, "Preach My Gospel" and "Teaching, No Greater Call." Teachers should use them in lesson preparation to help invite the Spirit which can "carry [the lesson] unto the hearts of the children of men" (2 Nephi 33:1).
As members
of the Church, we all have the responsibility to be teachers. Parents are commanded by the Lord to teach children to understand repentance, faith in Christ, baptism, and receiving the Holy Ghost lest "the sin b
e upon [their] heads" (D&C 68:25). Home-teaching and Visiting-teaching companionships have the responsibility to teach and challenge the families they visit to draw nearer to the Lord. Individuals are also responsible to do all they can to learn principles of salvation.
In addition to teaching, each of us also has the responsibility to act on the things we receive. President Joseph F. Smith said: “When [we receive] the truth [we] will be saved by it. [We] will not be saved merely because someone taught it to [us], but because [we] received and acted upon it” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1902, 86; see also Teaching, No Greater Call [1999], 49; 1 Timothy 4:16).
As a Bishopric, we invite you to follow President Osguthorpe's message to teach the doctrine of Christ and to act on it. We know that as we follow this council the Spirit will be ever more present in our lives and the lives of those whom we teach to help us withstand the temptations of the adversary.
May the Lord bless each of you as you strive to strengthen your homes and improve your personal lives.
